Every firm is a collection of activities that are performed to design , produce, market, deliver, and support its product. All these activities can be represented using a value chain.

Given the importance of the value chain, Michael Porter developed a strategic management tool for analyzing a company’s value chain. 2  Porter, known for Porter’s five forces, 3  laid out his Michael Porter, a Harvard University graduate, wrote a book in 1985 named – Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance, which identified three strategies which businesses can use to tackle competition and create a sustainable competitive advantage. According to him, these three generic strategies are: How to Create Competitive Advantage Differentiation. In order to stand apart from your competition, your business' product or service must provide Cost Advantage. Another strategy for gaining competitive advantage is by focusing on cost leadership.
